Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Fine lines and wrinkles are an inevitable part of the ageing process, with numerous causes. Most facial lines are created by the repeated use of the underlying facial muscles, which eventually produce a permanent crease or wrinkle.

What is Xeomin®?

Xeomin® is a prescription medicine (incobotulinumtoxin A) that is injected into muscles and used to improve the look of moderate to severe frown & wrinkle lines on the face.

What can Xeomin® do for me?

When administered correctly by a trained professional, Xeomin® can relax overactive muscles that causes creases around the eyes, forehead and between your eyebrows. This softens wrinkles and diminishes the formation of new ones. Visible results can be seen in just 7-10 days with results that may last up to three months.

What areas can be treated?

Xeomin® is frequently administered on the upper face. The most popular areas are the horizontal forehead lines, vertical frown lines between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet (or laughter lines) radiating away from the eyes and bunny lines (small creases on the bridge of the nose). While it would probably work around the mouth and chin on your marionette and nasolabial lines, it would almost undoubtedly weaken the smile and so we do not recommend this treatment for this area. Creases around the mouth may however be improved by smoothing them out with a dermal filler.

How long does treatment last?

Successful therapy lasts between 3 and 5 months for most patients. Repeat treatment is advised every 4-5 months to ensure the muscles stay sufficiently frozen to allow the furrows to smooth out. In practice, this means attending the clinic three times in the first year. After using Xeomin for one year the intervals between injections may be longer so you need it only twice a year.

Is Xeomin® safe?

Xeomin® injection is currently one of the most popular cosmetic procedures. The treatment is now 21 years old and therefore has an established safety record.  Generally, Xeomin® is categorised as a quick and effective treatment, with fantastic results and virtually no downtime.

How painful are the injections?

We use the smallest needles and the medicine itself does not tend to sting as much as injections of local anaesthetic. Most patients refer to it as being as painful as having their eyebrows plucked. It is advised not to use aspirin or drink alcohol on the day of treatment as this can increase the risk of bruising.

Who should not receive Xeomin®?

  • Pregnant women; although there have been no reports of birth defects with this medicine, no pregnant patients will be treated.
  • Breastfeeding; similarly, there is no evidence that Xeomin® is expressed in breast milk but it is best avoided if breastfeeding.
  • Patients with a history of neuromuscular disease (multiple sclerosis and myasthenia gravis) or other types of diseases involving neurotransmission should avoid this medicine.
  • Patients taking the following medicines should not receive Xeomin®: aminoglycoside antibiotics, penicilins, and calcium channel blockers.
  • Known allergy to human albumin (egg white) or Xeomin®.

What are the risks?

As with any injection, there can be some bruising and minor swelling however this is not severe and usually resolves within a few days. Uncommonly, if the Xeomin® reaches the upper eyelid muscle there can be transient drooping for approximately 4 weeks.  This is the most significant risk and happens in about 1 in 1000 injections. It develops from a local spread of the Xeomin® from the injection site and can be minimised by accurate dosage, proper placement, as well as keeping in an upright position for three to four hours after the injection. If drooping eyelids occur, special eye drops may reduce this symptom until fully resolved.

Botulinum Toxin Xeomin® is a quick and safe procedure that has very little impact on usual activity on the day of injection. We deliver tiny injections to relax the action of the muscles that create excessive movement. These movements create ‘dynamic wrinkles’ over time. Here’s what not to do after Xeomin® – we recommend the following precautions to allow the anti-wrinkle injections to work optimally in the targeted muscles:

  • No rubbing or massaging of the injected area for 4 hours after treatment, including facials.
  • No strenuous exercise for 24 hours after treatment.
  • Keep upright for 4 hours — no lying on your front. Minimise activities such as shoe shopping.
  • Avoid headwear that is tightly fitted across the forehead.
  • Reduce excessive alcohol consumption or medically necessary blood-thinning medication before the treatment to prevent bruising.

How soon after can I go back to my normal exercise regime?

Patients can resume normal daily activities immediately following treatment. Light exercise after Xeomin® can be performed after 4 hours but it is recommended that strenuous activities are avoided for 24 hours. After 4 hours you may perform light exercises such as:

  • Walking
  • Jogging
  • Upright yoga (avoid any positions that leave you lying flat or upside down)
  • Gardening.

It is recommended that you wait 24 hours before attempting any strenuous exercise after Xeomin®, including:

  • Weight training
  • Cross-training
  • Long-distance running
  • Yoga (positions where the body is inverted).
